How to SubmitSUBMISSION GUIDELINES We are currently reading commercial and literary fiction, non-fiction, children's fiction and picture books. We do not accept poetry. We receive submissions by post and prefer not to receive phone and email enquiries. Send three chapters (double spaced), a very brief synopsis and word-count, and a covering letter with biography. Please include your email address but do not submit by email. You should also enclose an s.a.e. and mark your envelope 'ADULTS' or 'CHILDREN'.
We currently receive more than a hundred submissions each month and request the full manuscript from only a handful of authors. We would highly recommend that, as the competition is so tough, you send your manuscript to an editor or literary consultant before submitting it to us.
At the moment our list is full for authors of picture books and short fiction and non-fiction for readers under eight; sadly, we will not be reading work of this nature until further notice.
We would also advise authors from countries outside the UK to seek an agent in their home country first. We find that so many books that come to us from America, for example, are very much US based and would benefit from a US primary publisher and agent.
READERS Rachel Leyshon (Adult) has worked in book publishing since 1994, for the most part as an editor of adult fiction and non-fiction, although she began her publishing career in a literary agency. She is now a freelance editor for many of London's general trade publishers, and lives and works in Bath.
Margaret Histed (Children) has worked as an editor for several publishers and as a reader for Orion and Chicken House. She has also read for BBC Talent and for the Scholastic/Independent Story of the Year competition. She is a freelance editor and her book - Old Babies, New Babies - is published by Ragged Bears.
