You’re a Bad Man, Mr Gum! the first in the series, instantly shot to fame when it won the Red House Children’s Book Award in the same year. Since then, the gruesome Mr Gum books have only gone from strenght to strenght winning awards and rave reviews book after book. Additionally, a special World Book Day story, Mr Gum in the Hound of Lamonic Bibber published in March 2009 was the top selling WBD title, selling over 167,000 copies (not included in the 1 million figure). Translation rights for Mr Gum have sold in 29 languages. Andy Stanton said ‘What? Mr Gum? Never read them. I'm afraid I don't really care for that sort of thing, I prefer Proust.’ Leah Thaxton, Andy’s editor said ‘Getting a new script from Andy makes my day. I’m thrilled he has so many other fans out there too.’ Eve White said, ‘The moment the manuscript for Mr Gum book 1 landed on my desk was the highlight of my career. I downed tools, shut up shop, picked up my 7-year-old daughter from school and said, ‘I’m taking you out for tea; you can eat spaghetti while I read you something very exciting.’ As hundreds of people have since told me, you can really embarrass yourself reading these books in public!’ |
