Yvvette was asked about the book and how she came to write it: 'I've done many writing course and workshops but as a full-time working mum, I never had the time to write 'seriously'. The turning point was my 39th birthday, which marked the start of a period of intense reflection. Overnight, I became aware that I might be at the halfway point in my life, or even past it. Literally, as far as my dreams were concerned, it was going to be now or never. During the following year, I worked part-time, ignored the laundry, cooking, cleaning and telephone, and wrote my novel. She said that her reaction to being long listed for the Man Booker was one of 'stunned elation'. And her holiday to Portugal shortly after hearing the news helped her celebrate in style. |
