Captain Valiant and Me

by Adam Britten

It's hard being a superhero when you don't like your costume...

...and the name - Dynamic Boy - how embarrassing is that?

It's even more embarrassing when your father is Captain Valiant: his costume doesn't fit because he's eaten too many bacon sandwiches.  And then, fighting super villains does get in the way of revising for maths tests.

But what happens when Captain Valiant is out of action and a monster from outer space threatens to destroy the Earth?  It's time to stop worrying about the silly costume and the school work and time for Dynamic Boy to prove how much of a superhero he really is.

from CAPTAIN VALIANT AND ME

I hated my costume. When I got home and hung it up in the secret compartment behind my wardrobe, I looked at it for some time and wondered why I had to wear it. Dad, he got the red, white and blue jumpsuit. Mum, she got the red, white and blue cape and tights. My sister, she got the cloak of invisibility. All I had was this black and gold thing with the lightning flash down the front. I looked like an electric bee. And I had the worst name of all: Dynamic Boy. Now Captain Valiant, that was fine. Ms Victory, that suited Mum. Moon Girl, that was a good one, even though it was my sister’s. But Dynamic Boy; what was that supposed to mean? And they never got it right on the telly. They always called me Dynamo Boy. I knew why. It was the lightning flash down the front: the Electric Bee strikes again. Why couldn’t I have a good name like one of the American superheroes? Why couldn't I be a Spider-Man or a Wolverine? The Americans always did things better than us. I mean, Spider-Man and Wolverine made wearing tights seem normal. But Dynamic Boy...I pressed the secret button on the secret door. It hissed shut. Dynamic Boy was so embarrassing.
