Claudia McGoldrick

Claudia McGoldrick

Claudia McGoldrick (née McElroy) was born in Germany, grew up in Scotland, and has Irish and American nationality. After abandoning a predestined career in law, Claudia first went to West Africa in 1989 - a naïve university graduate with relatively little experience of life but a thirst for adventure. From that first journey to Ivory Coast was born an obsession that would last the best part of two decades. Returning to West Africa as a school teacher and later as a journalist, she lived in the sub-region for several years and subsequently revisited numerous times. Working as a freelance reporter for Reuters news agency, the Guardian newspaper and the BBC World Service, among others, she reported mainly on the closely connected civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Since 2006, Claudia has been working for the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross and has continued to write about West Africa, contributing to numerous books and publications. She lives in France with her husband and two daughters.
