It’s Fern’s best friend Zoe’s hen night. Also along for the evening are Zoe’s younger sister Libby, her future sister-in-law Charlotte and a work colleague, Priya. Libby pays for a fortune teller to give each of the girls an individual reading, as a last-minute surprise for her older sister, and the girls go along with it to keep in the good-humoured spirit of the occasion. When a tipsy Fern steps behind the curtain to have her reading, the fortune teller gives her the usual patter and then shocks her by revealing that she had the love of her life and let him go. Fern is sent into a tailspin over this. Thirty-two, with most of her friends coupled up and her options dwindling, could she really have screwed up her one chance at happiness?
And there’s one major problem: Fern needs to figure out just who her soul mate is in order to find him again…
